Forum Overview

Over the past 4 to 5 years there has been lots of talk about the potential crisis the Aged Care Services Sector is facing in relation to ‘Workforce’.  The reasoning behind the ‘potential crisis’ includes the:

- increasing demand for the services provided by our Sector (ageing population)
- decreasing pool of people to recruit from (small number of work age people)
- change to government policy (consumer directed care etc.)
- changing expectations and needs of consumers (higher acuity of people entering Residential Care, more people wanting to stay at home, higher expectation of services provided)
- age of the Sector’s Workforce (50% of Workforce to retire in the next 15 years)
- funds available (expectation to provide more with less)

ACSA recognises that as a Sector if we are to be proactive in addressing what were once considered potential,  however are now real and current workforce issues, that the time for talking is well and truly over and it is time to start doing!

It is our aim to identify and implement ‘initiatives’ in a way that enables us to meet the needs of both organisations within a Region, and the Region as a whole.  Over the next six months (then ongoing) we will be conducting Regional Workforce Forums within each State.  The purpose of these Forums is to:

  • Explore the demographics of the region
  • Confirm Regional priority areas and issues
  • Identify possible solutions
  • Develop a basic (realistic) 12 month Regional Workforce Action Plan (e.g. what are the key issues that will be addressed over the coming 12 months, how and by when)

We encourage all organisations to participate in the Forum and take the opportunity to ensure that your organisation’s workforce issues are being addressed and that you have a voice in identifying Regional Priorities and planning the way forward.
