Abel Tasman Village offers some sweet support to fellow aged care providers

Earlier in the year ACSA shared the story of Abel Tasman Village staff relocating a beehive that was quietly working away in the ceiling of one of their buildings. ATV’s General Manager, Glenn Kirkman, has shared with ACSA the following update on their busy bees and how they are looking to use the honey to raise funds for a fellow aged care provider in rural NSW that has been severely impacted by recent draught and bushfires. And the best part is… we can all help!

"Recently I visited with our beekeeper Andy to process and bottle up our honey and here is our first venture… let me tell you it has a lovely smokey finish and is delicious!

You might recall prior to COVID-19 we had the devastating drought and bushfires (who would have thought that in February we also had the storms resulting in the power outage!).  In discussion with the team it was decided that we would like to donate the proceeds from raffling off our honey.  Some time back we did a small fundraiser for the Grace Munro centre in Bundarra NSW (near Armidale).  At the time they were devastated by the drought and went on to Level 5 restrictions as the dam was at 33 per cent.

Moving forward a few months, whilst there has been rain Grace Munro need to look at long term strategies to avoid such a dire situation happening again.  With this in mind they need the funds to purchase a water filtration system.  We wish to assist in three ways:

  • We are raffling 4 jars of pure honey to the highest bidders within the ATV family and friends community.  Each jar comes from the Village hive that Jeremy and I personally removed (with a little help from Andy).  Normal retail would be about $7 a jar so I am hoping you can dig deep!  Any family interested in submitting a bid can email it to me via .  I will run this for two weeks closing Monday 13 April.
  • Staff raffle – I have three jars that I will be running a raffle at our next staff meeting…again this will go to the highest bidders – but the boss will be watching (pretty sure I have the persuasive power of getting the bids up…I reckon I might double the highest bid?).
  • Corporate auction – we have a 1 kg jar with some of the honeycomb.  I will be reaching out to our contacts to see who might like to support this worthy cause.  Many organisations are doing it tough right now but if you want to put your company in the mix let me know.
